Sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), as well as child health in disasters and health crises

The course provides you with a comprehensive understanding of sexual and reproductive health and child health in disasters and health crises, along with tools to improve these areas.

Objectives

The aim of the course is to give the participant an overall understanding of SRHR and child health in disasters and health crises, as well as tools to improve it. In addition, it aims to give insight into how international health response related to the SRHR and child health can be planned and organized, with a focus on international humanitarian response.

Participants should be able to:

  • Describe the global burden of common diseases and conditions in relation to sexual and reproductive health, as well as their clinical manifestations and management.
  • Describe the global burden of common diseases and conditions in children, as well as their clinical manifestations and management.
  • Plan interventions for the prevention and management of SRHR and children’s health in disasters and health crises.

Content

The course is based on the global health situation with a specific focus on SRHR and child health. It further shows how different types of disasters influence these, as well as which general and special measures are relevant to maintain SRHR and child health in crises and disasters.

  • The global health situation of SRHR
  • Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) for Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) in crisis situations
  • Safe motherhood
  • Family planning and abortion care
  • Health strategies and interventions for sexual and gender-based violence, including female genital mutilation
  • The global health situation related to children’s health
  • Children’s vulnerability and health in disasters
  • Integrated management of childhood diseases
  • Neonatology and care of the newborn child
  • Preventive, integrated, and curative health care for common childhood diseases and child health threats
  • Care and management of acute malnutrition

When and where

Dates: The course starts on March 23 and ends on April 2, 2025. Lectures on campus will take place from March 24 to March 28.

Course venue: Karolinska Institutet Solna, Stockholm, Sweden.

Licensed healthcare professionals and other health professionals with relevant backgrounds.

Extra information

This is one of four courses that together provide you with the competencies, strategies, and tools to enable you to work as humanitarian health assistance staff. The four courses give a comprehensive preparation for health professionals. The first course and fourth course also comprise a useful introduction to the field for other professionals.
